5. David's Column
Why so popular?

Remember Disney's Frozen? The movie was hugely successful worldwide, but it was particularly popular in Japan. The theme song was playing everywhere for months after the film's release. As anyone who has spent a long time living in a foreign country would do, I have picked up on quite a few peculiar things about Japan since I first came. These peculiarities extend to all aspects of life: language, culture, cuisine, etc. In this month's column I'd like to introduce a few examples of foreign media that, from my own experiences, seem to be much more popular here than at home.

Perhaps the example I used above wasn't the best one. Frozen certainly was popular back in Australia, though I couldn't really observe its success, having been in Japan since it was released. But from what I have read online, it did not make as much an impact as it did in Japan. A better example may have been Stitch, from Lilo & Stitch. I have never seen this movie (another Disney animation), I have no idea what the story is about ? or even what Stitch is supposed to be ? but I see this character everywhere in Japan. And even now, 14 years since it was released. I'm sure most of my friends back home know as little about Stitch as I do. I have nothing bad to say about Stitch, but I wonder why he is so popular here in Japan.

It's not just movies which enjoy surprising success in Japan. I have always found it odd how familiar my Japanese friends are with the cartoon Tom and Jerry and the American sitcom Full House. Sure, I have heard of them, so they must have been successful at least to some extent in Australia… but they're both before my time, especially Tom and Jerry (first released in the 1940s). Their popularity in Japan seems to transcend generational preferences. Another more recent example is 24. Am I missing out on something by not watching these shows?

I've noticed this popular-in-Japan peculiarity with bands and singers as well. I recall one of my first ever karaoke sessions in Japan, about nine years ago when I was in Sapporo. My host mother was shocked that I had never heard a particular song by the Carpenters. Unfortunately I don't remember the song, but I have had this same experience more than once. My colleague tells me the Carpenters' songs are used in English classes, which would explain how well known they are in Japan.

I'm sure there are many more examples of "big in Japan" artists or television series, etc. Those detailed above are just ones that I have come across, and is far from a completed list. And perhaps my understanding of the popularity of each example differs from everyone else's. My understanding, obviously, is shaped from my own experiences, so asking other foreigners living in Japan may garner completely different opinions.
