2) 2008 International Dontaku Troupe "Otsukaresamadeshita!"
I would like to give a warm appreciation for everyone who has come to participate for this year's Dontaku International Troupe and would like to further extend "Otsukaresama deshita!" for completing the festivity with a ton of success! Blessed under the ray of golden sun and vibrating Hakata atmosphere, we were once again able to create a memorable and joyful experience for all those who have come to watch the annual Dontaku parade.
A group of dance performers called "ODORU INDOJIN" led the troupe this year, and under the diligent guidance of Neela and Sakina, we were able to introduce a colourful Indian dance and traditional music to Hakata, as well as shake the crowd's soul in a party and jubilant mood like never before. From everyone's hearty effort, we won the award for the "Dontaku Troupe Ninki Contest" as one of the top troupes!
Needless to say, as long as there is Hakata Dontaku Parade in which our Dontaku International Troupe rests, our ambition in organizing the most vivid and mosaic troupe will never halt. Thanks to all of you once again, for your cooperation, and participation in Dontaku, and I hope that everyone had a superb day in making new friends and especially marching on the parade to show your respective culture, or engaging in one form of internationalization in Fukuoka.
I hope to see everyone in the next year's International Dontaku Troupe, for it will definitely be bigger and better! Until then, keep your "Dontaku" spirit alive!

Regards, Nobuo Gondo

5. Nobu's Footprints in Fukuoka

Coming of summer?

It almost feels like yesterday when I felt the spring's cool zephyr running through my skin and the climate was pleasantly warm for going out. However, now, the gray and gloomy days of tsuyu season are seriously making me consider whether my blue umbrella is my next best friend in town. I'm sure that everyone is feeling somewhat sticky in a greenhouse-like environment, where the rising humidity is quickly eating up our pocket change for cold drinks (Kirin for beer lovers) at conbini or vending machines. So, how do you combat this annoying heat and rain? Well, here are some practical suggestions which I can offer.
I guess the hot weather and rainy days are not as dreadful as they seem, if you take certain measures before
and after leaving your house. For instance, these days in the morning, I try to leave a little early for work when the humidity is conditioned by the morning breeze. This way, my newly-ironed shirt is not drenched with sweat and stays crisp when arriving at my office. Besides, I get to enjoy a comfortable and virtually an empty bus ride while tuning into cool music to meditate my brain, and it definitely makes my day productive as the saying, "朝起きは三文の徳" or "early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise". Believe it or not, taking a hot shower in the morning also helps you to climatize and reduce the drops of your perspiration; however, this is given the fact that your body's temperature is higher than the outside temperature (i.e. The Second Law of Thermodynamics: heat spontaneously flows from high to low temperature environment).
Another tactic to consider is what to eat for lunch. Eating ramen is perhaps the worst choice on the list, for not only do you have to work in a dripping condition at work after (from both the sweat and the drizzle), but the high carbohydrates contained in the noodle and the tonkotsu (pork bone broth) soup make you drowsy after a few hours of digestion, in which case a canned coffee becomes the seemingly only available solution to stay focused (or your supervisor's sound scolding to wake you up!). How about fixing sandwiches or bento? Though this could be a frustrating task at sunrise for a single male who is a gourmet but not a home cook, it is actually a very effective solution in overcoming heat and saving money.
Basically, at the comfort of your air-conditioned office, a healthy lunch is ready, right in your eyes, without having the trouble to wait in a line of umbrellas outside, or having to sit beside an unacquainted person at a stuffy restaurant with whom you share no interests (the culture of aiseki which I've mentioned in the past issue).
Once you step outside the cool building, however, the world is a different place with stickiness surrounding you swiftly from all angles. Though there really isn't a universal panacea to counter this (unless you can convince "Theoi Ouranioi": the gods of sky), Tenjin has a great escape route such as the Tenjin Underground Mall, which has a cooler environment than above the ground. Since it's virtually connected to most of the major department stores and subway stations, it's also a gateway to grocery shopping, a desired bus stop, or a cooler place called "home"! The only concern is "eye shopping" in which I occasionally end up coming back home late with an extra bag of "something".
Needless to say, most of the buildings in Japan are air-conditioned fairly well from the beginning of June or even a lot earlier; thus, as long as you stay in the shade with your handkerchief, and avoid fatty foods which add extra heat into your system (unless you release it via exercising), I think you can survive June and hopefully July, but the real summer lethargy is, as you know, just around the corner.
